Question about footnotes

[baguhin]

Hi @Aleator! I saw an earlier comment of yours showing how to properly format footnotes and would like to thank you for it. Just a question, though: are there currently ways of handling footnotes that would 1) preserve the numbering or force a numbering to be the same as the source page, particularly if the numbering resets every page instead of throughout the book, and 2) notes which are different from the main flow of numbers, for example the * seen here between note 7 and 8 in Pahina:Mga_akdang_pampanitikan_sa_tuluyan_(JRNCC,_1961,_pangmadlang_palimbag).pdf/11? Thank you very much. ColossalMemer (kausapin) 09:50, 19 Disyembre 2025 (PST)Reply

Hello @ColossalMemer! I've searched help pages and more without success. It seems (AFAIK) that the numbering order is displayed sequentially and cannot be forced. Perhaps the explanation would be that it would make possible to repeat reference labels (e.g. page 1 with "ref31" ok; page 2 with "ref31" ok; transclusion of page 1 + page 2, with 2 "ref31" not ok; so the system creates page 1 with "ref1", page 2 with "ref1", and transclusion of page 1 + page 2 with "ref1" (page 1) + "ref2" (page 2)). For the same reason it is not possible (AFAIK) to insert any footnote between note7 and note8 without breaking the sequential numbering.
But we can do something using a combination of manual note labeling and sections. I think that trying to explain would flood this page ;) so it is best to see a live example: Pahina:Mga akdang pampanitikan sa tuluyan (JRNCC, 1961, pangmadlang palimbag).pdf/210 is like Pahina:Mga akdang pampanitikan sa tuluyan (JRNCC, 1961, pangmadlang palimbag).pdf/11 but with the manual notes. And the transclusion is in Tagagamit:Aleator/test (the red links will disapear when an admin creates MediaWiki:Proofreadpage pagenum template -just copy the code from another Wikisource-). Feel free to edit both pages.
I hope it helps :) -Aleator (kausapin) 06:54, 20 Disyembre 2025 (PST)Reply
Thanks for testing it out, this is very detailed! Seems that it's really a limitation of the software, & the superscript solution might do in a pinch once refined. And yes, I hope an admin creates the pagenum template soon... ColossalMemer (kausapin) 07:44, 20 Disyembre 2025 (PST)Reply
